The term of letting the red wine breathe is oftentimes used. This is leisurely done by removing the cork and letting the bottle breathe, from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the age of the wine. For greater efficiency, pour the wine into a decanter for oxygenation. The decanting is necessary especially to older wines in order to remove sediments within the wine.
